Kids & Pets - a Safety Checklist!
Dogs & Kids can have a wonderful relationship, but remember - a dog should never be considered a "toy."

Here is a checklist to help children learn how to interact with dogs!

Rules for Kids & Pets
  • Remember that a dog is NOT a toy! Always be kind to dogs - never pull on their hair, ears, or tail.
  • If you meet a strange dog, always ask the owner if you are allowed to pat the dog. Even if your dog
LOVES playing with you, you must remember that some dogs are afraid of children. The dog's owner
will know if their dog will want to say hello to you. If the owner tells you know, walk away from the dog -
don't feel bad, there will be another dog that you can say hello too very soon!
  • Always approach a dog from the side. Some dogs are afraid to be approached from the front. Never
EVER run up to a dog and grab them. Walk up slowly to the dog's side and say hello is a soft voice.
  • Remember - if you startle a dog or make a dog afraid, it could cause the dog to try and bite you. Most
dogs are very nice - so make sure you are on your best behavior to avoid startling them.
  • Always allow a dog to eat and sleep in peace. Unless you & your parents have trained your dog to
drop food or toys on command, don't try to grab anything from your dog's mouth. Never EVER bother
a strange dog when they are eating or sleeping. Just like you need your private time, dogs need
    private time too!
  • Don't grab a dog's toys, either. Always ask the dog to "drop it" and then pick up the toy - don't try to
tug or grab the toy from the dog.
  • Always respect a dog's space - you don't know if the dog is going to be protective of their crate, bed,
car, or pen. Never EVER stick your hand in a strange dog's crate or pen. This may cause the dog to
be afraid and bite you out of fear.
  • Make sure you do lots of fun things with your dog! Remember, a dog is a friend for life - they depend
on you for food, water, exercise, attention, and care. Make sure you spend a lot of time with your dog!
